360 degrees of Awesome

9/27/2015

Awesome Arts | Arts en folie is a free program developed by MASC, a charitable organization with a passionate commitment to provide schools and communities with experiences of artistic excellence and creative process.

The program has been offered in our community for the past five years, variously in partnership with the Lowertown Community Resource Centre (LCRC), Patro d’Ottawa and the Centre de services Guigues.

When developing a new program for participants, Awesome Arts en folie takes a 360-degree view. At the core is an issue worth exploring. Guides representing the three facets of the arts—visual, literary and performing—are engaged to mentor participants in the creation of artworks that, in turn, are presented to an audience, thereby completing the circle.

This fall, Awesome Arts en folie is running a Nature Sound Recording Workshop in partnership with the LCRC and Fieldwork, an art collective in Maberly, Ontario. On Saturday, September 26, 16 youths headed out to Fieldwork in Maberly to record nature sounds with Chad Clifford. They then worked on site with music producer Sergio Guerra, to mix the nature sounds with different beats that the youths create with a drum machine. It was a really great creative outing in the country mixing urban and rural elements.

Awesome Arts en folie also ran a wildly successful program last spring, involving 200 participants ranging in age from five to 95 years old.

The purpose was to draw the community together through creative and artistic process with a final showcase at the end of the program.

Vancouver's green revolution comes to Ottawa

The Deputy Mayor of Vancouver Andrea Reimer came to town September 16 and wowed a 350 strong audience at City Hall with the why and how of becoming the greenest city on earth. Vancouver city council has worked over three elections on the plan to become the greenest city in the world by 2020, and now stands at fourth. Techniques revealed included implementing as many environmental improvements as they could think of (84) even before they had an official greening plan; and engaging hundreds of thousands of citizens in pushing for green improvements. Other ingredients included strong leadership and a clear action plan. Ottawa’s Chair of Environment Committee Councillor David Chernushenko said “there is no reason why we could not or should not be doing everything that Vancouver is doing.”

Here is a link to some of the videos from that night.

Uptown Rideau CDP: LCA Planning committee summarizes some key features of the new plan

The Uptown Rideau CDP

On September 10 the City released its new Community Development Plan, or “CDP” for Uptown Rideau St, between King Edward and the Cummings Bridge. The Plan has been developed over the past 18 months, in consultation with a small working group of residents’ associations, including the LCA, property owners and developers.

The CDP’s Vision for Rideau Street is a vibrant downtown mainstreet, with stores, shops, restaurants and cafes at street level and places for people to live and work above. It seeks to fulfill this vision by addressing various topics governing the future development that will occur on the street, including:

  • Building heights – how tall buildings can be and where they will be located
  • Building form and design – how buildings should look and relate to each other
  • Heritage features – which buildings of heritage interest should be preserved
  • Ways to support pedestrians and cyclists –connections to cycling routes, wider sidewalks
  • Open spaces – new small parks or plazas, wider sidewalks

A Chance to Express Your Views on City's Draft Budget - 2016

(From our friends at CAWI)
Your Views - City’s Draft Budget 2016
(French version below)
The City of Ottawa is facing a $41 M deficit.  This could mean cuts to important city services that we all depend upon, and others that address the needs of the most vulnerable in our community.  The annual property tax increase has shrunk every year since 2011 (2.45% to 1.75%).  This has meant a tighter budget each year amidst rising costs and financial pressures.
An increase of 1% is $36 per year on the average property tax bill and would give the City$14 M in revenue.   What investment are you prepared to make to ensure quality of life in our city? In the coming weeks, City Councillors are inviting input to inform the draft budget to be released November 12th.

Contact the
Mayor and your City Councillor or attend a budget consultation (see below) to let them know what you want to see in the draft budget.

Potential message:  I would like to make an informed choice as to choosing between services and tax increases.  In the draft budget, I would like to see options as to what services would be cut or maintained with a 2%, 3% or 4% tax increase.  Will you take steps to ensure this happens?
