Housing & Homelessness Committee
Lowertown is an area of Ottawa strongly associated with Homelessness, as we host two of the cities’ adult emergency shelters Shepherds of Good Hope & the Salvation Army. We are also adjacent to a third shelter, the Ottawa Mission and associated social services in the nearby vicinity of Sandy Hill and Vanier.
In 2020 the City of Ottawa updated its Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness recognizing a need for enhanced prevention measures and formalizing a “housing first” approach to addressing homelessness.
How is the city doing? The Ottawa Alliance to End Homelessness releases regular issue papers highlighting successes and challenges ahead. Noted in the latest issue papers was a significant demand for more affordable, appropriate housing. Currently over 12,000 households are on the city’s waiting list for affordable housing.
The Housing and Homelessness Committee promotes the inclusion of all residents in Lowertown including owners, renters as well as those who are homeless or precariously housed. The committee seeks to raise neighbourhood awareness of the causes of unaffordable housing, the stigma surrounding homelessness and the barriers to housing accessibility. We work with community service providers and the city to advocate for affordable housing, mental health and addiction services, both in Lowertown and throughout Ottawa.
