Issues management
Board of Directors
The LCA Board comprises nine elected officers and directors who collectively provide a voice for the community in matters of neighbourhood concern. Our directors are also individually responsible for an organizational role or being the lead on a key issue. Their efforts are bolstered by board-appointed liaisons, each with their own mandate.
Committees
We have an active Planning Committee that follows City planning and development in our neighbourhood. The group meets monthly at the Black Thorn Restaurant.
The Heritage Committee meets each month in historic Lowertown houses. Its mission is to protect and promote historic Lowertown.
Oversight of the Environment and Transportation portfolios is led by LCA President Liz Bernstein, who works with ad hoc groups of volunteers on every aspect of these two critical issues.
Our interest in the ByWard Market heritage conservation district crosses all portfolios. In addition to the committees that oversee the market, two directors and one board-appointed liaison have individual roles in conjunction with the ByWard Market BIA (Business Improvement Area).
The Communications Team includes the people who produce and manage the various vehicles we use to stay in touch with residents, including the Lowertown Echo community newspaper, social media and this website.
Partnerships
Our alliance with the King Edward Avenue Task Force, which continues to fight for the removal of the downtown truck route, completes our issues management mandate.
We also partner with neighbouring community associations, including Lowertown East Residents Committee, Action Sandy Hill and Vanier Community Association, on issues of common interest. Our successful campaign to have a bike path installed on St. Patrick Street during its resurfacing last year is proof that there is indeed strength in numbers.
Lastly, the LCA is a member of the Federation of Citizens' Associations of Ottawa.
