Want to get the latest on what's happening in Lowertown? Come down and join us at 172 Guigues av for the LCA meeting tonight at 7pm! Venez nombreux! Agenda is below:
The all candidates forum will take place November 10th at the Chevaliers de Colomb, 260 McArthur Ave, from 7pm to 9pm. This debate is hosted by the LCA along with Action Sandy Hill, the Vanier and Overbrook community associations, Sandy Hill community Health Centre, the Lowertown Community Resource Centre, the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre, the Vanier Community Service Centre, Ecology Ottawa and the Potential & Current business owners of Vanier. Transportation/Childcare is available and the details are included below.
Please help! Our community has filed an appeal to stop or at least modify the development of what is now a derelict parking lot and two boarded up restaurants, the property known as 560 Rideau Street. If we don’t, that site may include a 14 storey tower. Not only would such a development defy the allowable height of six to nine storeys, but it would be an exception to the long awaited, hard won Uptown Rideau Street Community Design Plan. That plan recognizes the proximity to older homes in Sandy Hill and limits heights and density.
Although we are blessed with dedicated community volunteer activists, to be effective at the Ontario Municipal Board, we need professional help and that costs money. This is an important issue for Sandy Hill. The south side of Rideau St between Chapel and the Cummings Bridge borders our cultural heritage district. If the overdevelopment of 560 Rideau Street is not stopped, other Rideau Street property owners will have good reason to expect similar or greater exceptions to the planning rules. At our last LCA monthly meeting, a group from city Hall presented their Heritage inventory project to residents in Lowertown.
