Report - "Lowertown East: Our Disappearing Heritage"
A report entitled "Lowertown East: Our Disappearing Heritage" was prepared in reaction to a proposed development by Claridge Homes, which would include the demolition of four heritage buildings in Lowertown East. While development is welcome, the report tries to reconcile the need to protect heritage buildings. The report demonstrates that the houses threatened with demolition have a unique and important part in Lowertown and Ottawa's history. It also points out that there are very few of these particular kinds of houses left, especially in Lowertown East. Some options for saving and or integrating the current buildings threatened with demolition are made at the end of the report. Recommendations are also made to the City of Ottawa to take additional steps to better recognize the significance of heritage buildings in Lowertown and Ottawa. To view the report, please click here.
