New Inter-provincial Bridge

Macdonald-Cartier Bridge Sector, Prior to 1965 |
Prior to 1965, the City of Ottawa had made a promise to create a link between the proposed Macdonald-Cartier Bridge and the 417. A freeway was planned through Lowertown and Sandy Hill. Fortunately, although east Lowertown was ravaged by urban renewal, Sandy Hill was saved. The highway was never built. Another alternative considered was a bridge crossing over the Rideau River and connecting to the Vanier Parkway. This option was also cancelled. As a result, the destruction of King Edward Avenue and east Lowertown became the “short-term” compromise. Big mistake. In 1999, the Ontario Municipal Board stated that the all trucks must be diverted off of King Edward Avenue once a new bridge is built in the east end of Ottawa. There is a study currently underway to build this bridge.
