New Inter-provincial Bridge
 Macdonald-Cartier Bridge, 1965 |

Macdonald-Cartier Bridge Sector, Prior to 1965 |
Prior to 1965, the City of Ottawa had made a promise to create a link between the proposed Macdonald-Cartier Bridge and the 417. A freeway was planned through Lowertown and Sandy Hill. Fortunately, although east Lowertown was ravaged by urban renewal, Sandy Hill was saved. The highway was never built. Another alternative considered was a bridge crossing over the Rideau River and connecting to the Vanier Parkway. This option was also cancelled. As a result, the destruction of King Edward Avenue and east Lowertown became the “short-term” compromise. Big mistake. The community is still suffering greatly, because of this temporary solution. The hope is that many of the large trucks will be dispersed or removed from downtown to use more appropriately located bridges outside the highly dense urban core of the city. Members of both the Lowertown Community Association and King Edward Avenue Task Force are taking part in the Community Consultation Sessions.
